As of the start of 2018, service providers and suppliers in the automotive industry must be certified in accordance with TISAX. TISAX is a standard of the VDA (German Association of the Automotive Industry). It governs the IT security of suppliers and customers.

The composition and structure of TISAX are somewhat different to those of ISO 27001. It has more requirement areas relating to ISMS as well as additional chapters on the integration of third-parties, data protection, and prototype protection. TISAX is not an international standard but an industry standard for the automotive sector. Companies that use TISAX generally already have a full ISMS as per ISO 27001.

Only accredited inspection organisations are permitted to carry out TISAX certification audits. These include DEKRA and the TÜV, for example.
